When it comes to archery one of the most important things you need to consider is which arrows are the right ones for you. As well as the type of bow you use, the size and material of an arrow can greatly determine the performance you get, so it is vital that you know what to look for.

Our different arrow shafts.

We stock a variety of arrow shafts made from three different materials; wood, carbon and aluminium. These different materials can play a massive role in how an arrow performs as it affects what is known as the “spine” of an arrow. An arrow’s spine is the term used when referring to the measurement of an arrow’s stiffness, and the stiffness of an arrow’s shaft determines the penetration of an arrow into its target. As well as the material used to make an arrow and the length of the shaft, an arrow’s spine can also depend on the overall weight of the arrow including the arrowhead. A heavier arrow will have a stiffer spine while a lighter arrow’s shaft will bend in motion.

Each spine is measured based on it’s static spine (the spine of an arrow that isn’t being used) and a dynamic spine (the spine of an arrow in motion). That is why, when you’re shopping to buy arrows and arrow supplies, you will see a number like 500, 400, 340 or 300 before the word “spine”. An easy rule to follow is that the lower the number of the spine the stiffer the spine will be, thus the heavier the arrow will be too.
